How do I get to the major locations?

  • The events are located in Portland’s Deering Oaks Park. To get to the park:
  • From Northern Maine
    Take Interstate 295 south to Portland. Use Exit 6A for 100S/Forest Avenue and merge onto Forest Avenue. Continue for 400 feet and park with be on your right. On-street parking and parking lots are easily accessible in this area of the city.
  • From Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Southern Maine
    Take Interstate 95 into Maine. Use exit 44 from 95 onto Interstate 295. Use exit 5 ME-22 E/US 1A W from 295 onto Congress Street. Follow signs for Congress Street and merge onto Congress Street/ME-22 E. Turn left at St. John Street. Turn right at Park Avenue. The park will be on your left.
  • From Northern New Hampshire and Western Maine
    Take Route 302 into Portland. Once in Portland, Route 302 turns into Forest Avenue. Continue on Forest Avenue passing entrances for I295. Park will be on your right.

Where can I park?

  • Metered street parking can be found along a number of streets in downtown Portland. You can also park your car at one of the many parking garages located downtown. For a detailed list of parking garages and times of operation, visit the City of Portland’s website at http://www.portlandmaine.gov/parking/parking.asp#.
  • On-street parking is available along Deering Avenue, Park Avenue, Marginal Way and near the University of Southern Maine.
  • PLEASE NOTE that access to Deering Oaks Park and State Street Extension will be closed to traffic.

Is public transportation available to the event venues?

  • The METRO bus service offers public transportation within the Greater Portland area. For more information on routes and fees, visit www.gpmetrobus.com.

Where are public restrooms?

  • Public restrooms will be available at the Castle and additional porta-restrooms will be located throughout the park.

Where can I stay in Portland if I am coming from out of town?

  • There are a number of local hotels within walking distance of Deering Oaks Park. To get more information, got to www.visitportland.com.

Are there places to warm up or explore outside of WinteRush?

  • Downtown Portland is filled with fun shops and restaurants for visitors looking to warm up, enjoy a hot beverage or explore the latest fare at one of the Old Port’s boutiques. The Portland Public Library and the Portland Museum of Art will also be open during the day for people looking to get out of the cold. Will there be food?

  • The City of Portland Public School Parent-Teacher Organizations will be offering great hot, cold food and beverage treats throughout the park (including steamed hot dogs for lunch). All proceeds from the sales will go to benefit the school system. For those looking for a fun souvenir, Portland Co curricular Boosters will be selling WinteRush merchandise.
  • Visitors can also enjoy the many restaurants in Downtown Portland. For more information about fun places to grab a bite, visit www.portlandmaine.com.

Are these events free?

  • All these events and activities are open to the public and the majority are free of charge. Certain events require a registration fee to participate in the competition.
  • The entrance fee for competitors for the Pat Cushman Memorial XC Sprint Races is $5.
  • The entrance fee for competitors for the Maine Snow Sculpting Contest is $15.

Want to learn how to snow carve?

Portland Recreation is offering free snow carving workshops leading up to WinteRush’s Maine Snow Sculpting Contest.

Wednesday evening class series for anyone interested in learning about the hobby of snow carving.

Introduction to Snow Carving - January 20
Slide presentation of snow sculptures, show-n-tell of tools, and time for questions. All are welcome to come find out more about this unique medium. If it sparks your creative interest come to the remaining classes.

Snow Sculpture Design - January 27
The second class will focus on transferring your ideas into something you can create in snow. It will include sketching/modeling your sculpture - please bring modeling clay (or Sculpey/potter's clay/Play Doh/Model Magic/homemade kid's clay) if you wish. Paper and pencils will be provided.

Hands On Snow - February 3
Packed snow and tools will be provided to explore carving away to create shape and shadow. Dress for being outdoors that evening, and wear your most water resistant gloves or mittens.

Times: 6:00 - 7:30 pm
Ages: Individuals and Families with participants 16 years of age and older (to carve) who love to play in the snow!

Those attending the class series are welcome to carve for WinteRush and enjoy hands-on consultation with experienced snow sculptors also carving for the event. Peoples' Choice Award will be judged during WinteRush and announced at 2:30 pm, prior to the Festival's end.
